Fire season usually runs from the third Monday in April until the end of October. Burning permits are required for campfires, burning debris, burning grass and blueberry fields and for larger prescribed fires.
The province’s forest products industry is an important economic generator in rural NL providing more than 3000 person years of direct employment and upwards of 5,500 direct and indirect part-time and full-time jobs. Comprised of pulp and paper, sawmilling, and value-added sectors, the forest products industry in 2009 was valued at $250 million. Excluding some imported raw material used for value-added manufacturing, these industries utilize about 1.2 million m3 of local timber, predominantly balsam fir and black spruce.
