Over the past few decades, the injurious effects of human behaviour on the Earth’s natural systems have become increasingly obvious. However, despite scientific, scholarly, political, and popular initiatives of all kinds —from world summits to music festivals — the pace and scope of destruction has not slackened. There can be little question that ecological changes leading to extinctions of species and loss of habitat pose a threat to our health, our prosperity, and even our existence.
