"The purpose of this paper is to offer an overview of the current study of indigenous entrepreneurship. First, while there is broad agreement on the application of the term “indigenous,” there are differences of emphasis and outright controversies about empirical description of indigenous people, especially concerning the role of ownership and private property in their culture and traditions.Second, the concept of entrepreneurship is as controversial in this field as elsewhere in management studies.

This report contributes to the discussion of women and trade agreements by making the connections between First Nations women, forestry and free trade. It includes a literature review divided into the following subject areas: gender and Aboriginal women, traditional roles, the fur trade, Aboriginal title and rights, and free trade and logging in First Nations communities.

Nobody believes that certification will solve all problems confronting Indigenous Peoples as they wrestle with resource uses on their traditional lands. But it presents opportunities. It is not a substitute for the full recognition of treaty and aboriginal rights. Nor is it a convenient opportunity for the provincial or federal governments to continue ignoring the basic human rights and freedoms of Indigenous Nations. It is, however, a means for the forest industry to demonstrate leadership, good citizenship and responsible stewardship.

As Aboriginal communities increase their involvement in the forest sector, the need for development in various areas arises. Trained workforce, access to capital, business experience, research capabilities and heightened institutional capacity are all required, both to undertake management and, in cases, rehabilitation of reserve forests, and to derive benefits from opportunities in the broader forest sector.

The National Forest Strategy, a broadly based public initiative, identifies and charts the direction that Canadians, as stewards of the forest, need to move toward in order to deal with evolving social, cultural, institutional, environmental and economic factors in our journey toward sustainable forest management. As Canadians, we have reason to be proud that Canada was the first nation to form a national forest strategy, thus establishing a clear and widely based commitment to the pursuit of the sustainable forest. The 2003- 2008 Strategy continues this leadership tradition.

The objectives of the visioning exercise are threefold: 1. To identify, present and promote a 10-year Vision for First Nations Forestry that describes desired outcomes and measures of success; 2. To identify potential roles for government, First Nations and industry in contributing to the achievement of the Vision; and 3. To identify opportunities and priorities for future First Nations forest sector programming.

"Aboriginal peoples have had a long history of utilizing non-timber forest products While the type of products used is well document, little is know about the quantities collected and if these products could be sold and marketed as a means of income generation for Aboriginal peoples. This thesis examines three main components of the economic development for a potential NTFP in a sub-arctic aboriginal setting. The first part of this thesis examines the cultural and institutions implication of the collection of such a product in the Gwich'in Settlement Area (GSA).
