This innovative joint program with Red River College will provide an opportunity for individuals to earn both a Diploma in Indigenous Studies Administration from Red River College, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Indigenous Studies from The University of Winnipeg. The joint program draws on the distinctive advantages of both institutions: multi-dimensional perspective on Aboriginal governance using traditional and existing models; leadership, administration, management; research; policy analysis; conflict resolution.
The honours program in Indigenous Studies is most appropriate for students who especially enjoy the serious student of the field and believe that they may want to pursue a graduate degree in Indigenous Studies or a related field such as Indigenous Governance, Law, Business, Social Work, etc. honours courses are designed to allow for more intensive student participation and are primarily delivered through small seminars. Honours courses are also open to any qualified students who want a more personal and interactive education.
This program is designed to be multi-disciplinary. As well as taking introductory courses in four disciplines (Native Studies, Political Studies, Economics, and Business) students are required to take courses in four theme areas: Political Governance, Aboriginal Business and Economics, Traditional Knowledge, and Business. At the same time, students have enough flexibility in elective courses to tailor a program to fit their own needs and interests. This program can be taught on campus, or in a community setting.
The Aboriginal Self-Government Administration program trains students in the Aboriginal self-government process. The program teaches the fundamental aspects of the self-government process. Students will learn to gather and compile information using modern information technology, conduct research, prepare documentation, present materials, and analyze programs and proposals as they relate to self-governance.
The First Nation Public Administration (FNPA) certificate is a 10 course, 30-credit program offered through community-based delivery or semester delivery. The Program offers courses for administrators and managers who require specific skills and education necessary for effective and responsible management in local First Nations governments and Aboriginal organizations.
This program provides students with a combination of general organizational knowledge, and specific technical analytical and management skills and encourages them to develop a management style consistent with traditional and/or current Aboriginal values, beliefs, cultures and customs. Graduates of the diploma program also have the opportunity of applying for a related degree at an affiliated university. The graduate of the Business Administration Certificate and Diploma programs will have many employment opportunities.
This program provides students with a combination of general organizational knowledge, and specific technical analytical and management skills and encourages them to develop a management style consistent with traditional and/or current Aboriginal values, beliefs, cultures and customs. The graduate of the Business Administration Certificate will be prepared to work in such positions as administrative assistant or trainee manager in a business related field. Graduates will have the opportunity of expanding their education by applying for the Business Administration Diploma program.
The ATO Certificate Program offers students the skills and knowledge to seek employment in the tourism industry. Graduates of the ATO program are trained for positions in cultural tourism, ecotourism and many other entry-level positions in the tourism industry. Each semester includes field experience projects and placements that will develop hands-on skills and promote networking within the tourism industry. After a student has completed the ATO certificate program, the student can continue on another year to complete the ATM program.
This certificate program provides training in essential business communication, computer and administrative skills in the field of office administration. In addition to job related classroom and lab activities, students have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a variety of office environments through volunteer experiences, guest speakers, field trips and a six-week work practicum.
