To become a professional marine diesel mechanic you must learn how to install, operate and maintain a variety of diesel engines. We offer workshop, classroom and work term experience that will prepare you for a career in the operation and maintenance of marine diesel engines and auxiliary equipment. You will work on marine vessels, offshore drilling installations or in the land-based industry servicing the marine and offshore industries.
The Marine Institute’s joint diploma/degree in Ocean Mapping produces outstanding graduates with solid technical skills to collect, manage, analyze and disseminate ocean data. Delve deep into the ocean to examine the ocean surface, the water column, the seabed and the seabed subsurface. You’ll train in marine surveying equipment, optical and acoustic remote sensing technologies, oceanographic instrumentation and geographic information systems.
Ocean technology is a major driver of the oceans economy. Local companies are active not only in the offshore oil and gas sector, but have also expanded into international markets by developing and deploying innovative ocean technologies. Modern ships and offshore production rigs are equipped with instrumentation that enables the monitoring of all activities from a central control room. As well, ocean observation systems provide real-time information about ocean conditions or seismic activity.
Be among the professionals who influence this new and rapidly growing sector of the marine industry. As a marine environmental technologist, you will develop environmentally sound projects and work to prevent and create responses to marine pollution or degradation. You will go from lakes to rivers, and coastal zones to the fragile offshore. You will be responsible for protecting the marine environment and developing solutions to manage our marine resources. You will gain hands-on experience as you search for smart solutions in the field, lab and boardroom.
You'll learn how to design all the piping and support systems that permit marine vehicles to operate safely and efficiently in harsh marine environments. You'll use the latest marine design software to specify, select and design such marine systems as firefighting, bilge and ballast, fuel oil, lube oil, HVAC, and more. We'll teach you to design and select propulsion systems from diesel engines and gas turbines to propellers and water jets. And, you will be able to choose among careers, at home or around the world.
You will control ship systems and solve problems working with your mind and hands, both on land and at sea. We will equip you with the skills necessary to engineer a career you'll love. Responsibilities will include the mechanical operations of a vessel such as main propulsion and auxiliary systems. You will offer employers a strong technical background in marine engineering technology. With the real experience at sea in areas such as engineering knowledge, naval architecture, and machinery maintenance you will quickly distinguish yourself from the competition.
This program is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge required for employment in the field of Heavy Duty Equipment Technician. The work environment varies considerably from one job to another. It could be a heated garage or outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
In the present economic climate, the human and financial costs of workplace accidents have increased to such an extent that they have become a negative factor in economic growth. Progressive companies and organizations are constantly looking for ways in which they can reduce costs and become more competitive.
