"On May 19, 1993, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation Government took over the management of the salmon fishery in the Restigouche River where it flows between the provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec – waters the Listuguj Mi’gmaq people had fished for many generations. They did so not under a contract with provincial or federal authorities – the province of Quebec in fact opposed them. Nor did they do it by asking permission or receiving a request from some other government – they asked no permission and received no such requests.

"Economic development is believed critical to improving quality of life in the Innu communities of Sheshatshiu and Utshimassit, where substance abuse, low literacy rates, and living conditions far below national standards persist. The establishment of Innu Development Limited Partnership in 1998 was a decisive move by the Innu to generate business ventures. An impact benefit agreement associated with the Voisey Bay mine project and compensation from a land claim settlement will result in needed resources and business opportunities for the Innu.

"In 2008, Ulnooweg entered into a new partnership with the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nation Chiefs to establish a Business Development Team (BDT). The team provides business planning and development services to individual Atlantic First Nation communities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the Gaspe region of Quebec that are participating in the Atlantic Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (AICFI)."
