Apprenticeship is a method of learning the skills and knowledge necessary to become a skilled worker and a certified journey person. Apprenticeship combines on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson and classroom training at a training establishment. Most apprenticeship programs take two to four years to complete and combine approximately 80 per cent paid-on-the job training with 20 per cent technical/in-school learning - usually at Holland College or an off-Island institute.

In an interprovincial occupation/trade, an Interprovincial Red Seal will be affixed to the Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate and the Certificate of Qualification.

Examples: accounting and business, office administration, truck-driving, hairdressing and aesthetics, flying, computer technology, counselling, nursing-home and personal care, heavy-equipment operation, travel and tourism, call-centre service, classroom teaching assistance, etc.
