“Case studies that provide an in-depth and detailed understanding of how barriers to economic development on reserve affected economic opportunities in the Community of Membertou in Nova Scotia, Chippewas of Rama First Nation in Ontario, and the Osoyoos Indian Band in British Columbia. Each case study includes a review of a specific project, identifies the barriers to economic development encountered by the community during the development of the project, and – where possible – provides an assessment of the specific transaction costs incurred by communities to overcome the barriers.”

“This report is part of ongoing work at Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada to address the barriers to economic development on reserve lands. Its results will be used to inform next steps in partnership with First Nations to help create the conditions for economic success.”

"This paper focuses on the interaction between social capital and entrepreneurship in Aboriginal communities in Canada. Using statistical and interview data from three First Nations communities in northern Ontario, I examine if and how bonding networks turn into tangible resources for business development. The paper also highlights ways in which community relationships hinder entrepreneurship and turn into barriers to economic development.

"This study explores the question: how can Aboriginal communities foster a supportive climate for Aboriginal entrepreneurs and business start-up? The literature review finds a high degree of compatibility between the characteristics and strategies of community economic development and Aboriginal economic development. The unique aspects of Aboriginal economic development are further examined, including the history of Aboriginal communities, challenges faced, the importance of long-term approaches, cultural issues that impact Aboriginal economic development, and critical success factors.

"This strategic plan was developed with the view to establish broad long-term priorities relating to Aboriginal economic development which will guide the work and activities of the NAEDB and its Secretariat over the three year period (2012-15). These priorities will be linked to relevant objectives which will assist the federal government’s work to address the gaps between First Nation, Inuit and Métis, and non-Aboriginal Canadians.
For 2012-15, the NAEDB has identified the following long-term priorities:
1. Addressing Barriers to Aboriginal Economic Development
